The 50th Trends in Ophthalmology meeting in March 2025 was a very special occasion, as we celebrated not only a half century of Trends meetings, but also the 75th anniversary of the first implantation of an intraocular lens at St Thomas’ Hospital. The meeting was held at the Royal Society of Medicine, London.
The meeting deviated from the usual format, providing not only ‘trends’ and ‘updates’ across all the Ophthalmology subspecialties, but also one talk each day dedicated to a historical theme, with Prof Mahroo covering developments in the field of medical retina over the last 50 years and Prof O’Brart who took us through cataract surgery from its earliest inception to the current day.
The meeting was very much enjoyed by both delegates and speakers, and even the organisers managed to find time from their duties to mingle with attendees. It was particularly wonderful to see new and familiar faces and meet face to face with the organisers, speakers, delegates and industry sponsors, all of whom contributed to making the meeting so successful.
On Day 1, our nationally renowned Medical Eye Unit started off the meeting by taking took us through challenging clinical cases. This was followed by sessions on Oculoplastics, Orbit and Strabismus. The afternoon session provided updates on Anterior Segment Surgery and Paediatric Ophthalmology. The day ended with engaging talks given by Prof Mahroo on advances in medical retina and the Ridley Medal lecture was given by by Prof Geoffrey Rose on changes in orbital surgery over the years. The day ended with a drinks and canapes reception.
On Day 2, updates on ‘Trends’ in Glaucoma, Surgical and Medical Retina and Cataract surgery were presented in the morning sessions. The first Szeben Peto Foundation Research Prize was awarded to Mr Charles O’Donovan who presented his research findings on advancing patient-centred care. The day ended with six sub-specialty ‘Cases of the Year’ which generated a lot of lively discussion as usual.
A drinks and canapes reception was held in the Atrium, Cavendish and ENT Rooms in the evening on Thursday 13 March.

However there are still occasional requests trickling in as quite a few people appeared to have overlooked the links and QR codes provided for this purpose that were included in the programme, on lecture holding slides and on posters at the venue. Delegates that still require a CPD certificate need to complete a feedback form and then email eyehopeconferences@gmail.com to let us know that you have done so as unfortunately the process is NOT automatic.
